"When Todd Compton researched his award-winning book, In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith (Signature Books, 1997) he transcribed many items written by his biographical subjects. In Sacred Loneliness: The Documents collects the most important writings of these women, with introductions and helpful annotation. The book includes diaries, letters, memoirs, talks, and legal testimony. At times these chronicles are heart-breaking, but they can also be humorous, visionary, and devout, all while managing to document the daily struggle for survival. They are also an important record of the challenges and contradictions of plural marriage in Nauvoo, and later after the Latter-day Saints moved west. To understand plural marriage among the Great Basin Mormons, it is vital to see it through the eyes of those who lived it. Prioritizing the perspective of these women is essential because Joseph Smith entered into polygamy under a shroud of secrecy. The words of his wives therefore become the primary sources for understanding this turbulent time in Nauvoo and the doctrine they helped establish. Smith's plural wives ranged from young teenagers to women well past middle-aged. Some had living husbands with whom they still cohabited; for most, the Mormon prophet was their first marriage. In the twenty-five years since Compton's groundbreaking study introduced Smith's plural marriages to many Latter-day Saints for the first time, primary source material has become increasingly accessible and widely recognized for the ways it helps us understand and interpret the past. This volume is a welcome addition to understanding early Mormonism and those who shaped it." [From book jacket]
