James Adams was an early practitioner of plural marriage, participated in the first secret Mormon temple rites, and was a surrogate father of Joseph Smith. Adams had come to Springfield, Illinois, in 1821 and established a legal practice in addition to engagements as an insurance and general agent and land speculator. He was influential in the granting of a charter in 1839 to the Springfield Masonic Lodge, but his baptism as a Mormon may have occurred as early as 1836, despite the passionate anti-Masonic attitudes of some early Mormons. Others, however, saw masonry's virtues as its antiquity and fidelity to ancient truths as well as its emphasis on secrecy, a beneficial attribute for an organization supporting plural marriage.
