John E. Page was a successful missionary during his early days with the Church. However after the death of his first wife and their two sons, he seemed to lose much of his drive and motivation as a missionary. Though he was ordained an apostle during the life of Joseph Smith, he failed to heed several missionary calls, including the call to accompany Orson Hyde to Palestine. After Joseph Smith's death, Page became involved with the Strangites. James Strang felt that Page, as an apostle, would be a great asset to the Strangite Church. However, as before, Page chose not to fulfill the missions that Strang asked him to serve, and Page was continually asking for monetary funding from the church members when he did travel. He eventually moved from being a supporter of Strang to a dissenter and moved on to the Brewsterites and then the Hedrickites, both churches formed by former followers of Joseph Smith. He also became disenchanted with both of these groups before his death in 1867.
