The Reorganzied Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has traditionally denied that Joseph Smith had any connection with the doctrine of polygamy. It wasn't until the early 1980s that overwhelming historical evidence proved this belief untrue and forced the RLDS leadership and membership to come to terms with the idea that Joseph did institute the practice. Howlett attempts to document how the RLDS people attempted to "renegotiate" the issue and the end result of the process. He discusses how the RLDS historians eventually brought to light manuscripts within their own archives that implicated Joseph Smith in polygamy.
