Joseph F. Smith's life prior to 1906 is detailed. During this time he was beset by personal trials and challenges. His father died when he was very young, followed closely by the death of his mother when he was just a youth. A complex young man, he was passionate and quick to anger. His first wife, Levira, a cousin, had many bouts of ill physical and mental health. Their marriage ended in divorce after eight years. He was addicted to chewing tobacco and alcohol for many years.
