Ivie and Heiner present information about deaths among the saints taken from journals, diaries, and obituaries in newspapers. This article includes charts of deaths in Nauvoo by the year, causes of death by disease, and charts giving the numbers of deaths by year after Nauvoo in the Winter Quarters area. They conclude that (1) about half the deaths were connected with persecution of some kind, (2) babies and young children were especially hard-hit by death, and (3) after Nauvoo deaths by diseases connected with persecution were fewer. Ivie and Heiner estimate the death rate in Nauvoo to be 25 to 35 per 1,000, but feel more research needs to be done on this topic
