Jacob Backenstos was the sheriff of Hancock County, Illinois, during the time the Saints were in Nauvoo. He defended Joseph Smith against attempts to extradite him to Missouri and sought to protect the citizens of Nauvoo from mobs. Although he was recognized as a good and just man by the Mormons, that feeling was not shared by other citizens of the county. In 1845, he was forced from his home in Carthage by a mob. After the Mormons left Illinois in 1846, Backenstos's political career failed; so, he enlisted in the army to join the soldiers marching west to the Mexican-American War. He settled in Oregon, where he continued his political career. Unfortunately, he had a quick temper and was generally accused of sympathizing with the Mormons, so his career in polotics was not successful. He committed suicide at the age of 46 to avoid a jail sentence.
