This paper was originally presented as the Juanita Brooks Lecture at the 1992 Mormon History Association annual meeting. She discusses some of the methods she used in writing "A Midwife's Tale" and offers some suggestions about their relevence to Mormon diaries. She discusses the element of housework in Martha Ballard's 18th-century diary and argues that its history is "as important for understanding pioneer Utah as for understanding eighteenth-century Maine" in Martha Ballard's diary. She points out some of the similarities and differences between the Ballard diary and several diaries of pioneer Mormon women. She hopes that her discussion will encourage new attention to the aspect of housework in the diaries of Mormon women.
