"An attempt is made, therefore, to delineate the major features of the natural environment to which early Mormon culture, particularly its technological aspect, adapted and to describe the nature of this adjustment. The inquiry is concerned with the period of initial colonization, 1847-1857, along the eastern margin of the Great Basin. This is the decade when the Mormon "struggle with nature" supplanted temporarily the older struggle with unfriendly fellow men." [Author]
