The Gathering of Zion : The Story of the Mormon Trail

"Thus it is not primarily the route, but the people who traveled it, and how, and why, that is my subject. My betters have been before me at least part of the way. The most detailed histories of the trail itself have been written in the spirit of celebration and faith-promotion, and though most of them make extensive use of journals, they end by dehumanizing the emigrants almost as much as do the debunkers who see the migration as a movement of dupes led by blackguards. I would prefer to deal with the Mormon pioneers, if I can, as human beings of their time and place, the earlier ones westward moving Americans, the later ones European converts gripped by the double promise of economic betterment and eternal life. I shall try to present them in their terms and judge them in mine. That I do not accept the faith that possessed them does not mean I doubt their frequent devotion and heroism in its service."
