On July 18, 1843, Willard Richards sent a letter to Brigham Young who was then serving a mission in New York. The letter cotnaine a day-by-day account of Nauvoo, including a sermon delivered by Joseph Smith two days earlier on July 16. Richards recorded the sermon for Young, writing, Joseph preached all day... Mans foe they of his own house.- the Spirit that crucified christ, same spirit in Nauvoo. Referred particuarly to - I wont say who." Besdes recounting the sermon enemies in Nauvoo, Richards also have his opinion as to who was the foe, writing "was it Bro. Marks?- did not say." Two years later in MArch 1845, after Marks left Nauvoo, Brigham Young called him a "most low, dishonost mean" person.
