[2006 Mormon Historical Association Winner for Best Biography]
Not a traditional biography, this book is a remarkably candid topical approach to the adminstration of David O. McKay. A major source is the collection of personal diaries of President McKay, kept by his secretary, Clare Middlemiss. Feeling that his story would never be told properly if the diaries were not makd avaialable, she kept a duplicate copy and turned them over to her nephew, Wm. Robert Wright, who promised that he would see that the biography was written. Chapters in the book are as follows: Introduction; 1. "Prophet and Man"; 2. "Revelation and Prophecy"; 3, "Free Agency and Tolerance"; 4. "Blacks, Civil Rights, and the Priesthood"; 5. "Ecumenical Outreach"; 6. "Radio and Television Broadcasting"; 7. "Correlation and Church Administration"; 8. "The Education System"; 9. "The Building Program"; 10. "The Missionary Program"; 11. "Temple Building"; 12. "Confrontation with Communism";13. "Politics and the Church"; 14 "An International Church"; 14. "An Internatinal Church"; 15. "Final Years'; 16. "Epilogue."
