"Two themes figure prominently in the historical analysis of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the present era : growth and globalization. These two themes are inextricably linked together. The most impressive growth of this religious movement during the last half of the twentieth century occurred beyond the borders of the faiths birthplace in the United States. Rapid expansion in the last half-century prompted sociologist Rodney Stark to observe that if this growth rate continues much longer, Mormonism 'stand [s] on the threshold of becoming the first major faith to appear on earth since the Prophet Mohammed rode out of the desert.' Stark reaffirmed his projections for Mormon growth, initially made in 1984, in separate essays published in 1998 and 2005, respectively, noting that twenty years later, membership figures for the Latter-day Saints are substantially higher than his most optimistic projections. This growth changed the demographic core of Mormonism. For roughly the first century of its existence, the faith was largely regional, confined to the intermountain regions of the United States. By the end of the twentieth century, however, less than 15 percent of mall Latter-day Saints lived in the state of Utah (the traditional stronghold mof the faith since the nineteenth century), with only a third of the entire membership living in the western United States. By 1996, more members of the faith lived outside the United States than inside of it. The regional faith blossomed into a worldwide movement in an astonishingly short period of time. Current church membership exceeds fifteen million people, with over twenty-nine thousand congregations in 165 countries." [Author]
