Mormonism's Negro Policy : Social and Historical Origins
-
Salt Lake City
-
University of Utah Press
-
"The problem with the Mormon Church's Negro policy was one which bothered and perplexed my husband, Stephen G. Taggart, from his early teens. Steve always felt that the essential beauty of the Gospel lay in its optimistic view of mankind and its reliance on love, brotherhood, and diligence, whereby all worthwhile goals might be accomplished. The Negro policy could not be made to fit inside this framework....I hope this work will be received in the spirit in which it was written - as constructive criticism of a policy of the Church which seemed to Steve to be hampering implementation of the Church's basic goals and ideals."
