[2019 Mormon History Association Winner for Best Article in the Journal of Mormon History]
In the twenty-first century, only those over sixty have served as a ward teacher. But between 1912 and 1964, church-going LDS adult and youth men spent more time as a ward teacher than in any other calling. And nearly all served in that position. One hundred and fifty to two hundred thousand were ward teachers. Championed by Apostle and then Church President David O. McKay, the program generated extensive documentation through conference addresses, “Ward Teaching” pages in the Improvement Era, Presiding Bishopric’s monthly bulletins, Church News articles, lesson manuals, and monthly stake and ward reports. Yet the program lacks a history. The Encyclopedia of Mormonism mentions it in two sentences in the “home teaching” entry and it receives scant or no mention in church histories and biographies. This article provides a chronology, history, and assessment of how ward teaching served the Church and its members, leaders, and the ward teachers themselves. [Author's Introduction]
