"A topical format is used, with each section developed chronologically. The opening chapter, for example, covers the significant voyages of the missionaries in three types of vessels---windships, riverboats, and steamships---together with the conditions they encountered. In contrast to their converts, who emigrated in organized companies, the missionaries were largely on their own and crossed the water individually or in small groups.
"The remaining chapters focus on the emigration of converts to America. In sequence these chapters discuss the 'gathering' and its first stages, with European Saints traveling to Liverpool, the principal port of embarkation for the Atlantic crossing; the transocean passages under sail; river transportation aboard steamboats before expansion of the railroad westward; the later Atlantic and Pacific ocean passages aboard the faster steamships; and the half-century emigration in summary." [Introduction]
Appendices contain significant data about boats, passengers, routes, times, and death tolls. -
