This volume of the Joseph Smith Papers covers the first five months of 1844, a time rife with contention between the Saints and their neighbors in Illinois and Missouri. The Saints' relationship with the United States government was also strained; they failed to obtain redress for their losses in Missouri, and Joseph Smith began a presidential campaign after the candidates failed to show sufficient willingness to help the Saints. These months also saw the creation of the Council of Fifty, the delivery of the King Follett sermon, and the beginning of the search for a new home in the West.
