The article presents a biography of the anti-Mormon critic Augustine Spencer of Nauvoo, Illinois, who was later involved with the arrest and death of the Mormon founder Joseph Smith. Accounts are given mapping the genealogy and family history of the Spencer family. Details also provided noting the family conversion to Mormonism, the family enmity which grew between Augustine and the others Spencers, and Augustine's opposition to the Mormon Church later in life.
