“It is our belief that gender is a fundamental category for understanding the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that both quantitative and qualitative analysis can contribute not only to our knowledge of the differences between Mormon women and men, but how Mormonism as a whole interacts with a changing culture. This chapter will therefore highlight several major sociological findings about American Mormonism and gender from recent years, organized into two common categories for discussing religion: believing and behaving. Special emphasis will be given to our own national study, the 2016 Next Mormons Survey (NMS), which included a nationally representative sample with 1,156 U.S. respondents who identified as Mormons and 540 who identified as former Mormons (total N = 1696). The data of current and former Mormons is treated separately in the analyses that follow.” [Authors]
