John-Charles Duffy traces the use of the word "Lamanite" from the time of Joseph Smith to the present in talks and Church publications. He also traces attitudes towards the Indian peoples among Church members and leaders from early years to the present. The article includes an overview of Church programs aimed at Indian members. Duffy concludes that the Church is moving away from emphasizing Lamanite identity in favor Church member unity. He wonders how this will work out in light of the fact that Latin American members may become a numerical majority of Church members in the near future.
