The early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Aotearoa/New Zealand in southern Polynesia is associated with an intriguing cross-cultural engagement. In the ninth decade of the nineteenth century, thousands of indigenous Maori of more populous Te Ika a Maui or North Island became Mormons as a result of the efforts of Anglo-American LDS missionaries. A rolling wave of conversions spread between sub-tribal kin group settlements in southern, eastern, and northern districts in particular. Consequently, a new religious dialogue crossed North Island and, after the 1880s, Te Tau Ihu to reconnect discrete Maori communities of descent in an original, biocultural society. [From the article]
