[2006 Mormon Historical Association Winner for Best First Book]
[2005 John Whitmer Historical Association winner for Best Book]The authors attempt to show that Joseph Smith's presidential campaign had a direct effect on his assassination, and that rather than being the result of spontaneous mob activity it was the result of a "carefully planned military-style execution." The authors have been criticized for their lack of direct evidence. See the review by Jed Woodworth in Journal of Mormon History 32 (Spring 2006): 243-49.
