"The text of the paper which follows has been taken, word for word, from the manuscript Diary which Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886), Minister to the Court of St. James's during the Civil War, kept from May 1, 1824, to Novemner 2, 1880--a period of fifty-six years and sex months. This Diary reposes in the Adams Room of the Massachusetts Historical Society. Nothing has been omitted, but the Director has taken the liberty of adding greatly to the paper as it was read before the Society by the late Henry Adams (1875-1951) five years ago. He has corrected spelling, inserted punctuation, and established paragraphs." -[INTRO BY AUTHOR]
