This book "examines Mormon historical/scriptural perceptions of African Americans as they have evolved over the past quarter century. It analyzes the extent to which African Americans have been attracted to Mormonism, reports the differing experiences of African American Latter-day Saints following conversion, and discusses the varied reception given African American Mormons by nonblack, predominantly white Latter-day Saints on all levels--from the church hierarchy down to the 'grass roots.' . . .The primary goal of this volume is to inform the reader about the current situation of African American Latter-day Saints as it has evolved over the past quarter century. But it is hoped that these essays will also stimulate continuing open discussion concerning persistent problems involving race and racism, along with prospects for future progress. Indeed, the ideal goal for African Americans relative to Mormonism is best articulated in the Book of Mormon passage 2 Nephi 26:33. 'And he [Christ] inviteth them all to come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.'" (taken from book's introduction)
