Edwards reveals in the life of Smith the tension between the mystical and rational that he, Edwards, continues to experience. This essay is more personal than historical, evidencing the tension in his own life between his 'royal' blood and secular vision. The author posits that Smith was a mystic in the Eastern, not Western tradition. Hyrum Smith and Parley P. Pratt were especially important in creating church organization and theology. Hyrum used Masonic models in modeling church structure. This Mormonism is a sythesis of historical mystical experience and secular Masonism. -
