Written in reply to Paul M. Edwards' 'The Secular Smiths' [JMH 4 (1977)]. Compares Joseph Smith to mystics Muster Eckhart of the Western tradition and Sankara of the Eastern tradition. Author concludes that Joseph SMith fits neither tradition and that Edwards is wrong in identifying him with the Eastern tradition.
