Smith was one of many preachers and prophets of the New York 'Burned-over district,' but his teaching became the core for the only 'important American religion' (p. 3) to come out of this crucible. He was 'a 'human multitude,' an extraordinarily talented individual--a genius beyond question.' (p. 19) A harmonious picture of him is impossible, for 'Joseph himself had difficulty integrating the many facets of his complex career.' His behavior attested to 'not a split personality, but a splendid, gifted-pressured, sometimes opportunistic, often troubled--yet, for all of that, a larger than life whole man.' (p. 20) [See Marvin S. Hill's response]
