The general impression is that most members of the ill-fated 1856 Martin handcart company were marginal, ill-educated, and too poor to emigrate by any means except handcarts. This article focuses on six London Conference branch presidents who took their families with the handcart company. They were respectable, middle-class families who had the means to fund their own emigration in regular wagon companies but chose to go with the handcart companies as a matter of faith and to set an example. The author discusses the influence that Frederick Piercy's romanticized, illustrated account of his 1853 migration to Utah must have had on the handcart emigrants. From Piercy's lyrical and romantic description of traveling on the American plains, the handcart emigrants were ill-prepared for the tragic realities that they encountered. The disaster shook the faith of those members who remained in London. An appendix (pp. 198-200) lists the London members of the Martin handcart company.
