In 1856, John Hyde, Jr. was appointed to serve a mission in Hawaii. During the ocean crossing, he had become convinced that Mormonism was false. Upon arriving in the islands, he embarked on a campaign of public talks to condemn the Church and its leaders. This article reviews his life story and suggests some factors which may have lead to his apostasy. Some of these factors included jealousy, hurt pride, economic problems, and disillusionment with Church practices.
