"Of Brigham Young's fifty-six children, none is better known than Susa Young Gates. Born to Young and plural wife Lucy Bigelow, Gates became one of the most prominent women of the LDS Church, a defender of both her controversial religion and her equally polarizing father. Outside of Mormonism she joined the National Women's Council, where she associated with Susan B. Anthony and other prominent suffragists. Gates founded the Young Women's Journal and Relief Society Magazine, in addition to writing novels, poetry, and co-authoring a biography of her father, Life Story of Brigham Young, with her daughter. She served an LDS mission with her second husband to the Sandwich Islands.
"Neither her work nor her family connections shielded her from trials and heartbreak, however. She went through a divorce so bitter that she refused to speak of it. She also bore thirteen children, eight of whom died young. She battled her own personal demons as well and suffered serious health issues during a trip to Europe that would linger for the next three years.
"Depite Gates's role in the church and her work nationally, there has never been a published book-length biography of her--until now. Romney Burke took advantage of the extensive collection of Gates's papers across multiple archives. The result is an honest and deeply engaging portrayal of an important figure and a vitally important contribution to our understanding of the era in which Gates lived." [From back of book]
