Having many plural wives and dozens of children, Brigham Young's family life was very complex. Nonetheless he was devoted to his family and kindly in his deportment. He faced tremendous challenges in moving his family west and housing them in Salt Lake. He practiced holding family prayer and devotionals each evening and provided educational opportunities for his children. Over time, he was able to provide separate dwellings for most of his wives, but later reconsidered bringing them back into a single household at his large ranch in Cache Valley (this was never done).
