"This paper examines the motives behind the schism with the LDS Church and the causes of the 1946 reconciliation from the perspective of Third Conventionists themselves. We expand on previous scholarship by relying on unused primary sources, including the Informe General de la Tercera Convención and other correspondence with the First Presidency. We concur with earlier scholars who argued that the First Presidency misunderstood the Third Conventionists’ petition as a direct challenge to ecclesiastical hierarchy. However, we also argue that the actions of local religious authorities in the Mexican Mormon community, especially those of Harold Pratt and Isaías Juárez, had an extensive role in precipitating the schism. We agree with earlier scholarship concerning the significance of George Albert Smith and Mexican mission president Arwell L. Pierce to the 1946 reunification. We contend that Smith’s visit was of greater relative importance than Pierce’s diplomatic efforts. Finally, we conclude that the continued estrangement of noted Third Conventionist leader Margarito Bautista from the movement indirectly contributed to the reconciliation." [Author]
