Gooren offers a detailed analysis of five distinct periods of growth of the Mormon Church in Guatemala between 1948 and 1998. They cover the range from booming high growth to stagnation. He examines the factors present during each period that affected the rate of growth. He looks at the relative importance of such growth factors as the missionary activities, appeal of the organization and its doctrine, dissatisfaction with the Roman Catholic Church, etc. He discusses how the Church has had to compete with the Protestant and Roman Catholic Church for members and the feeling of anomie in the population. He discusses some of the attendant problems with the Church in Guatemala: lack of people equipped to fill callings, leadership, and poor retention rates. In essence, there is a declining growth rate, i.e., the Church is stagnating in Guatemala.
