As the field of American history - and especially American religious history - has taken a "biographical turn" over the past few decades, scholarly biographies of Mormon figures have also increased. Along with landmark biographies of Church leaders, the lives of more ordinary Mormons, especially those who lived in the United States, have been canvased as never before. By contrast, scholarly biographies of non-American Mormons and of twentieth-century Latter-day Saints continue to be few and far between. In the following essay, the author seeks to appraise-though not in a comprehensive fashion-the past decades of Mormon biography against the aims of American historical writing and of the New Mormon History and then give a few thoughts on the future of the genre.
