This article is an expanded and retitled version of a talk presented September 26, 2008, at a meeting of the John Whitmer Historical Association in Burlington, Wisconsin. D. Michael Quinn discusses the concept of group identity and the powerful forces that can convert a person to another religion. He uses his family ancestry to illustrate this, and comments on the strength of belief. He discusses Joseph Smith and early Church history, and gives examples from that era to illustrate the unity and faith of the early saints. Quinn concludes that an 'us vs. them' mentality has both positive and negative results.
