Jan Shipps work, "Sojourner in the Promised Land: Forty Years Among the Mormons," is a collection of essays dealing with the history of the Church, Joseph Smith and LDS theology, perceptions of the Church, and whether Mormons are Christians. It is an autobiographical narrative of Shipps' work and study. But this essay by Barlow focuses less on this book, and more on Shipps' influence in the field of Mormon history. He refers to this as Shippssifiction stating that "her interpretation of who and what Mormonism means in the wider world of religion, culture, and scholarship has become the dominant paradigm through which outsiders and many insiders, view the movement." His conclusion is that no true scholar of Mormonism can or should avoid Jan Shipps' work. However, students of Mormon history should not focus solely on her work, but should also look through the lens of other scholars.
