Dr. George B. Sander was the Mormon Battalion's military surgeon. Fleek argues for a reappraisal of Sanderson based on new sources, including Sanderson's journal, acquired by the University of Utah in 2003. Fleek describes the commonly held view of Sanderson as a malicious quack as unfounded. He states instead that Sanderson was operating within medical and military standards of the day.
