Studies early medical practice in the United States, including the period of heroic medicine, heavily dependent on massive doses of calomel as a panacea. Samuel Thomson (1769-1843) and botanic medicine followed, in reaction. Several early Mormons practiced Thomsonian medicine. The two methods were practiced extensively through the Civil War. Heroic use of calomel ceased ca. 1880.
