Despite the frequent problem of underdocumentation in women's history, Compton attempts to give historical attention to Jacob Hamblin's wives. Compton discusses each of the known wives: Lucinda Taylor, Rachel Judd, Sarah Priscilla Leavitt, Eliza, of the Shivwits, Louisa Bonelli. He also discusses the wives' time on the Little Colorado, and their widowhood in Eastern Arizona.
