Incest in Mormon polygamy is a topic which has received renewed interest by historians and social scientists in the last quarter of the twentieth century. Much of this interest stems from an article authored by Theodore Schroeder which was published in 1915 in a short-lived scholarly journal, "The American Journal of Urology and Sexology." Schroeder was an attorney interested in Freudian sexuality who lived in Utah for ten years. An examination of Schroeder's article reveals it to be more a case study of sexual values in the 1910s than a historical documentation of Mormon sexual practices. The nineteenth-century definition or incest was much broader than the general understanding of the term by modern students of family abuse. The range of incestuous situations considered by Schroeder were very broad. They included the following kind of marriage situations: to wife's relatives (usually sisters), first cousins, half-sisters, uncle-niece, and father-daughter. The only one of Schroeder's categories that occurred in significant numbers was marriage to the wife's sister. When Schroeder's article is examined in depth, it is evident that incest by today's standards was not a serious consequence or coincidence of Mormon polygamy.
