In search of a better method of immigration than the handcart system afforded, Brigham Young instituted the up-and-back church trains, which operated between 1861 and 1868. Over 18,000 converts were transported to Utah via the church trains during this period. Initially thought to be unfeasible, successful freighting journeys from Salt Lake to the Missouri River and back to the valley were made experimentally by Feramorz Little in 1859 and Joseph W. Young in 1860. Outfitting stations were established in Salt Lake City and at the eastern point of departure, which changed over time as the terminus of the transcontinental railroad moved decidedly westward. The story of the church trains is generally overviewed for each year of operation. There were no church trains in 1865 and 1867, due primarily to losses incurred in Indian depredations in Utah. Assignments were given to wards to provide manpower, vehicles, livestock, and supplies each year for the church trains.
