The Great Salt Lake has been a matter of some curiosity since it was discovered by early trappers and explorers. When the Saints first arrived in the valley, it was of great interest to them too. In fact, it is of some significance that Salt Lake City was named after the lake and not after some uniquely Mormon concept. As Mormonism grew, though, the peculiar religion began to overshadow the Lake in curiousity to the outside world, and eventually, both have taken a back seat to man-made spectacles in the west, such as Disneyland.
