Beginning on April 8, 1890, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles held quarterly meetings, separate from the First Presidency of the Church. This article provides a brief historical background for these conferences, then focuses on the confence in July, 1901. It then reproduces the minutes of that conference, as recorded in the journals of Rudger Clawson and Anthon H. Lund. A major topic of discussion centered around question of whether beer should be sold at the Saltair resort. This leads to a discussion about the practice and interpretation of the Word of Wisdom, with the apostles expressing a number of differing opinions. They also discussed the status of colonies in Canada, including difficulty in establishing a church school system that met Canadian standards; news from the Mexican colonies; the worthiness of young people to enter temple, and concern for those who marry outside the faith having been previously married in the temple. Near the end of the meeting, President Snow enters and Clawson records Snow's words at length on the Word of Wisdom and strict temperance. Snow also addresses concerns among the Twelve over giving up polygamy, using Heber J. Grant as an example.
