The complex relationship between the Maori and the Mormons in New Zealand in the 19th-century is explained and described. Explanations are offered as to why the Mormons had a considerable successful impact among the Maori while other orthodox churches did not. Some of the factors which accounted for their relative success included the immersion in and accommodation to the Maori culture, successful relationships with tribes and chiefs, the impact of the sensitive land issue, the appeal of the "House of Israel" doctrine, and evidence of prophecy and healings. Although Mormon missionaries identified with the Maori to initiate their early successes, they gradually undertook to change the people and their culture.
