This article is essentially a biography of Martin Harris during the crucial early years when the Book of Mormon came forth. The product of a stubbornly independent religious heritage, Harris continued the tradition, moving from Protestant sect to sect. He was intimately acquainted with scripture, and was apparently known as something of a superstitious visionary. Despite these latter eccentricities, more than a dozen of Harris's Palmyra contemporaries described his 'honor, honesty, industry, peacefulness, and respectability, his hard-headed, Yankee shrewdness and his growing wealth.' The article concludes by relating Harris's involvement in the procuring of the gold plates.
