In the early years of settlement in Utah, communities often sponsored competitive hunts of predatory animals and birds. He describes two of those hunts--one in the Salt Lake Valley in early 1849 and the other in Cache Valley in the 1860s. He also suggest several reasons for these predatory hunts ranging from survival to hatred of predatory animals to recreation to military training.
