James H. Martineau, an early Utah surveyor, was especially active in mapping townsites and resurveying work in northern Utah in the 1860s, 1870s, and 1880s. His work often took him away from his families (he was a polygamist) where he experienced personal loneliness. He was often beset by financial reverses and earned his living collecting taxes, operating a photograph gallery, etc. He did considerable surveying for railroads also.
