In this essay Sandberg explores what Joseph Smith himself meant by the term 'translation,' conlcuding that it did not mean document-to-document translation but, rather, a form of revelation connected with his growing knowledge and understanding, from other sources, of Abraham. He also explores Joseph Smith's possible knowledge of Abraham, particularly from non-Biblical sources, before he began to 'translate' the Egyptian papyri.
