In the early 19th century, Catholicism and Mormonism were despised and constantly the object of persecution and criticism. Each was seen by the mainstream Protestant culture as dangerous to American republicanism and morality. In this context, Grow discusses how each of the ostracized religions perceived the other. He first discusses the Mormon perceptions of the Catholic Church by explaining that early Mormon figures identified the 'mother of harlots' or 'great and abominable church' solely as Catholicism, using statements from known LDS personalities such as Parley P. Pratt, Eliza R. Snow, and Moses Thatcher as evidence. The Catholics, on the other hand, were determined to establish a place for themselves in the mainstream by distancing themselves from the Mormons and by implicitly arguing that Mormonism was the proper target for the politcal attacks aimed at Catholics. Statements from Catholic authorities, such as Samuel Mazzuchelli, Pierre-Jean De Smet, and Orestes Brownson are used to illustrate how Catholicism tended to point to Mormonism as the 'abomination of abominations.' Though most perceptions of the two churches did seem combative, Grow also discusses the relations of the two religions during the early 19th century in the Salt Lake Valley. Lawrence Scanlan, an Irish born Catholic that supervised the Catholic Church in Utah from 1873 until his death in 1915, made great strides towards tolerance and goodwill. However, this atmosphere of understanding did not extend to other areas of the country, as was shown in national Catholic periodicals of the day that were continually denouncing Mormonism in matters of politics and morality. In conclusion, Grow explains that the early relations between Mormons and Catholics illustrates the concept of the Other, studied by cultural historians, when a dominant group develops an identity by reducing a minority group to a stereotyped representation of the antithesis of the dominant group's core values.
