Mormon theologians like B.H. Roberts, James E. Talmage, Joseph Fielding Smith, and Bruce R. McConkie relied upon 19th-century nterpretations of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and their over-simplified views of bringing light back into a dark world to justify the Restoration. Although their views have generally persisted in Mormonism, some Mormon authorities and scholars are voicing interpretations and views that are more in line with contemporary thinking about the Middle Ages.
